Intellectual Disabilities are characterised by difficulties in intellectual functioning (thinking, reasoning, problem-solving) and adaptive behaviour (everyday life skills, social and practical abilities). These challenges can range from mild to profound, depending on the level of impact on daily functioning. While diagnosis often occurs before the age of 18, adults may also seek assessment if concerns were not identified earlier.
A formal diagnosis involves a comprehensive assessment to understand strengths, areas of difficulty, and individual support needs. With tailored interventions and supports, people with intellectual disabilities can improve their quality of life and actively participate in education, work, and community life.
